How anvil costs work

Every time you combine two things in an anvil, Java Edition adds up three charges. The item in the right-hand slot is the one used up, and only its enchantments are charged:

  • Enchantments: each enchantment coming from the right-hand slot costs its multiplier times the level it ends up at. A book uses half the item multiplier (at least 1), which is why books are cheaper than sacrificing a second enchanted item. Two equal levels merge one level higher, so two Sharpness IV books make Sharpness V. Java charges the final level even when the left item already has it higher.
  • Prior work penalty: each time an item goes through an anvil, its penalty roughly doubles: 0, 1, 3, 7, 15, 31 levels (2n − 1 after n uses). Both slots pay theirs, and the result keeps the higher count plus one.
  • Conflicts: one level for each enchantment on the left item that conflicts with an incoming one, such as Sharpness and Smite. The conflicting enchantment is not added.

An operation that costs 40 levels or more shows Too Expensive! in Survival and cannot be done. That is why the order matters: merging books with each other before they touch the item keeps the item's prior work low. The calculator above tries every order and picks the cheapest one that keeps every step under 40.

Cost multipliers in Java 26.3

Levels charged per enchantment level. These come from the game's own data for 26.3; switch the version in the calculator and it uses that version's values.

How to use the Anvil Calculator

Pick an item and the enchanted books you have, and the calculator finds the cheapest order to combine them in an anvil: which two go in the left and right slots at each step, what each step costs, and whether any step would be Too Expensive!.

Quick steps

  1. 1Pick the item you are enchanting and your Minecraft version
  2. 2Tick each enchanted book you have and set its level
  3. 3If the item already has enchantments or has been through an anvil, add them under Already on the item
  4. 4Follow the numbered steps, left slot then right slot, or copy them

Example use cases

  • Plan a god sword or max-enchanted armor without hitting Too Expensive
  • Find out whether one more book still fits on an item with prior work
  • Compare the cost of fewest levels against fewest XP points

Tips

Merge books with each other first; the item's prior work grows every time it goes in
Two books of the same level merge one level higher, up to the maximum
Copy the link to share a plan; it opens with the same item and books
Need the item right now? The Enchantment Builder makes it with a /give command

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest order to combine enchanted books in Minecraft?

It depends on the books, so the calculator tries every order and picks the cheapest. As a rule, merge books with each other before they go on the item, put the book with the most expensive enchantments in the right-hand slot as few times as possible, and keep the item itself out of the anvil until the last steps, because every anvil use raises its prior work penalty.

Why does the anvil say Too Expensive?

In Survival an anvil refuses any single operation that costs 40 levels or more. The cost grows with the prior work penalty (0, 1, 3, 7, 15, 31 levels after each use), so an item that has been through the anvil five or six times becomes Too Expensive to touch. Combining in a better order keeps every step under 40.

How is the anvil cost calculated?

The cost is the prior work penalty of both items, plus each enchantment coming from the right-hand slot times its multiplier and its final level, plus one level for every conflicting enchantment on the left item. Books use half the item multiplier (at least 1). The multiplier table on this page lists every enchantment.

Does the calculator work for older Minecraft versions?

Yes, for Java Edition 1.17 to 26.3. Pick a version and the item list, enchantments, levels, conflicts and multipliers follow that version: for example the mace and its enchantments only appear from 1.20.5, and spears and Lunge from 1.21.11.

Does it work for Bedrock Edition?

No. Bedrock charges only the levels an enchantment gains rather than its final level, does not charge for conflicts, and has a few different multipliers, so its costs differ. This calculator follows Java Edition rules.

What does XP points mean in the result?

Each step costs levels, and higher levels hold more experience. The XP points figure is how many experience points it takes to reach each step's level from zero, added up: the least experience you can spend if you collect the levels for each step separately. Choose "Fewest XP points" to optimize for that instead of total levels.
