How to Use the Potion Editor

Create custom Minecraft potions with a visual editor. Choose from base potions or build custom effects with full control over amplifier, duration, and particles. Generate /give commands for potions, splash potions, lingering potions, and tipped arrows.

Quick Steps

  1. 1Select a potion type โ€” regular, splash, lingering, or tipped arrow
  2. 2Choose Base Potion mode to pick a vanilla potion, or Custom Effects mode to add your own
  3. 3Customize the potion color, name, and quantity as needed
  4. 4Copy the /give command from the output panel and use it in your world

Example Use Cases

  • Create overpowered potions with custom amplifier levels for adventure maps
  • Generate tipped arrow commands for custom combat scenarios
  • Build lingering potions with specific area-of-effect durations for traps

Tips

Tipped arrow effects last 1/8 of the potion duration โ€” plan accordingly

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a custom splash potion with a /give command?

Pick Splash Potion in the Potion Type selector, switch to Custom Effects mode, and add the effects you want with their amplifier and duration. The Output panel gives you a /give command you can paste into chat or a command block to receive the finished potion.

What is the difference between base potions and custom effects mode?

Base potion uses one of Minecraft's built-in vanilla potions (Swiftness, Strength, Regeneration, etc.) with their normal durations. Custom Effects mode lets you stack any combination of status effects with arbitrary amplifier levels and durations โ€” useful for overpowered or themed potions on adventure maps.

How do tipped arrows work in this editor?

Switch the Potion Type to Tipped Arrow. The effect is applied to whoever gets hit by the arrow, but only for 1/8 of the potion duration โ€” so if you set a 60-second poison potion, the arrow applies 7.5 seconds of poison. The editor accounts for this automatically in the preview.

Does the potion editor work with the new 1.20.5+ command format?

Yes. Pick your Minecraft version in the top-right selector and the command updates. 1.20.5+ uses the modern item component syntax (minecraft:potion_contents={...}); earlier versions use the legacy NBT CustomPotionEffects tag. The editor generates the correct form for the version you pick.

Can I make a lingering potion cloud that lasts longer?

Choose Lingering Potion as the type โ€” the cloud radius and duration settings appear automatically. Cloud duration is independent of the effect duration, and you can tune both. Or use Summon Effect Cloud mode to place an area-effect cloud directly with the /summon command.
